The North-East Zone B of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) on Monday, commenced a 2-day capacity building workshop for media practitioners in the six states of the subregion.
The workshop which is holding at the Conference Hall of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Center in Bauchi, has as theme: ‘Contemporary Issues in News and Programme Production’ drew participants from Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe.
In his opening remarks, BON Zonal Chairman, Yusuf Alhaji Isa said that the idea of organising the workshop was conceived some time ago during a Zonal meeting held in Bauchi facilitated by Sunnah TV.
According to him, “Why we agreed to host this workshop, we considered so many things because many of us who are now at the helm of affairs at the various media houses were either from the Newsroom or the Programme department.”
The Chairman stressed that it is not easy for one to detach himself or herself from what one is used to, therefore, the need to build up the capacity of the upcoming practitioners.
Though he lamented that the turnout was poor, the Organisation will not be deterred as the objective is to impart knowledge and fresh ideas to the participants in order to boost their already acquired knowledge stressing that Broadcasting is a dynamic aspect of Media practice.
According to him, “We need to refresh ourselves about trending issues in the Broadcasting industry and so, there’s the need to ensure regular updates that will enhance quality production”.
“All of us here are either from the Newsroom or the Production department, we therefore need to learn new things to enhance our production. We need to give out, those things the audience want to watch and listen to,” he added.
The BON Zonal Chairman expressed confidence that with the calibre of the resource persons, the workshop will deliver the set objectives urging the participants to make it an interactive participation.
He then appealed to State Governments to look into the various problems militating against smooth operations of most of the government-owned Media Houses stressing the importance of upgrading facilities and most importantly, digitisation process.
Some of the participants expressed their happiness over the workshop stressing that as media practitioners, there is the need for regular training and retraining to keep them abreast of happenings in the Broadcast world.
They commended BON and their respective media organizations for organising a capacity-building workshop at a time such as this.
