The immediate past Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Prince Matthew Kolawole, has expressed deep sadness over the recent boat mishap on the River Niger and extended his heartfelt condolences to the Kogi State government and the affected families.
Describing the tragic incident, which involved a boat carrying approximately 200 market women, as “one accident too many,” Kolawole emphasised the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in water transportation.
The accident, which occurred during a journey from Kogi State to Niger State, highlights significant concerns about waterway safety, he noted, stressing the importance of revisiting strategies to prevent future occurrences.
In a statement personally signed by Kolawole, he conveyed his deepest sympathies to the victims’ families and urged them to find strength in the face of such a devastating loss.
He also prayed for the repose of the souls lost in the tragedy and called on God to prevent future mishaps on the waterways.
Kolawole advocated for a thorough investigation to uncover both the immediate and underlying causes of the accident. He underscored the need for preventive measures to safeguard water transportation in the region.
While commiserating with the bereaved families, Kolawole commended the Kogi State government for its pledge to support the victims’ families and collaborate with federal agencies to ensure adequate assistance for the injured and others impacted by the tragedy.
