A devastating boat accident occurred in Zangon Maje, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa, claiming the lives of several young girls.
The incident happened when a boat carrying 17 passengers, mostly girls aged between 10 and 13 years, capsized mid-way through its journey from Digawa Village in Jahun Local Government Area to Zangon Maje Town.
According to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), preliminary reports confirm that seven passengers were rescued alive, four bodies have been recovered, and five persons remain missing.

The NSCDC spokesperson, Mr Badruddeen Tijjani, stated that “of the 17 passengers, 16 were female, highlighting the devastating impact of this incident on young lives and families.”
Rescue efforts are ongoing, led by the NSCDC in collaboration with local divers and community volunteers, to locate the missing individuals.
The cause of the boat mishap is yet to be determined, with investigations currently underway.
“The Command assures the public that necessary measures are being taken to avert future occurrences and ensure safety across the state’s waterways,” the NSCDC assured.
NSCDC State Commandant, Alhaji Bala Bawa Bodinga, expressed deep sympathy to the affected families and communities, praising the swift response of rescue teams and volunteers.
“The loss of such young lives is devastating,” he said, emphasising the need for improved safety measures on the state’s waterways.
The incident has plunged the local community into mourning, with many calling for increased safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
As rescue efforts continue, the NSCDC remains committed to finding the missing individuals and supporting the affected families.
