Boat mishap: 54 dead, dozens missing in Niger

At least 54 bodies have been recovered following a boat accident involving approximately 200 traders in Kogi State.

The tragedy occurred during a night journey along the Dambo-Ebuchi section of the river. The victims were predominantly women, petty traders, and artisans.

The Head of Operations for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Kogi State, Justin Uwazuruonye, confirmed the incident.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, he said, “The number of recovered bodies as of Saturday, according to the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency, Red Cross, and NEMA, is 54. They were recovered dead.”

He also highlighted the absence of a passenger manifest, making it difficult to determine the exact number of passengers. “Additionally, it was a night journey, and none of them had life jackets,” he added.

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) also confirmed the incident. Suleman Makama, Head of NIWA’s Media Department, stated that the traders were en route to a market in Niger State when their boat capsized.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has expressed deep condolences to the Government and people of Kogi State, particularly the families affected by the boat tragedy on November 29, 2024.

In response to the tragic incident, the IGP has directed the Force Marine Officer to lead a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the mishap. The objective is to identify contributing factors and develop actionable strategies to prevent similar occurrences on the nation’s waterways. This investigation will also provide insights into improving overall safety and emergency response systems for water transport across the country.

The IGP further assured the people of Kogi State and Nigerians at large of the Police Force’s unwavering commitment to coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure the swift rescue of missing passengers. Resources and operational modalities have been activated to intensify search and rescue efforts.

Additionally, the IGP called on waterway operators, boat owners, and other stakeholders to collaborate with the Force Marine Department in adopting and enforcing critical safety measures to protect passengers and operators alike.
