The founder of Big Brain Naija television show, Charles Awuzie, has criticised the popular and recently concluded Big Brother (BB) Naija reality show.
The Nigerian South African-based founder of Gemsbok Group recently made this criticism through a post on his verified Facebook page titled ‘5 facts about Big Brother Naija you didn’t know…’
Awuzie stated that BBNaija is not Nigerian-owned and that the owner, Stephane Courbit, is from France and owns the French company, Banijay Group, that produces the reality show.
He further stated that BBNaija was formerly filmed in South Africa while the content was consumed by Nigerians, but the money went to France. He added that even though the show is now produced in Nigeria, the money still goes back to France.
He revealed that in 2015, a criminal court issued a €250,000 fine to Courbit for “Wrongfully obtaining €144 million in investment funds from aged Liliane Bettencourt, citing the use of false information and omissions, and in general, misuse of her diminishing mental ability.”
Awuzie lamented that “the porn-style content” does not reflect the Nigerian culture, and that despite protests by many Nigerians, the show has continued to show such content.
Since he made the post, fans of BBNaija have been criticising him, some of them saying he was demarketing the show while promoting his newly founded Big Brain Naija.
“I see some funny comments by fans of a show that rewards emptiness − probably because such fans are empty themselves.
He stressed that he can afford to look away from Nigeria and the problems in Nigeria.
He added that he is criticising BBNaija because he is fighting for the mental health of Nigerian children and the younger generation.
“But if you continue to defend emptiness, believe me, I will look away and enjoy my life the same way I looked away from your politics and religious papas,” he said.
