President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are welcoming President-elect Donald Trump and Melania Trump at the White House after attending a service at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
Typically, after the morning service, the president-elect, vice president-elect, and their spouses visit the White House, where the president-elect and the outgoing president hold a brief private conversation.
This year, Biden and Trump, along with their wives, are expected to share tea at the White House. Traditionally, the outgoing president then accompanies the president-elect to the U.S. Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony.
In 2021, Trump bypassed Biden and chose not to uphold the tradition of inviting the president-elect to the White House.
This custom has been in place since 1837, beginning with Martin Van Buren and Andrew Jackson.
