The Benue State Government has raised concerns over an alarming increase in snake invasions at several Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps across the state. The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), James Iorpuu, revealed this on Wednesday while distributing relief materials to affected individuals.
Iorpuu reported that 15 IDPs had been treated for snake bites, with the cost of treatment running into millions of naira. He expressed relief that swift actions by health teams and support from partners have helped mitigate the situation.
To combat further occurrences, the state has undertaken fumigation of all camps, including the Ikyogen camp, to prevent more snake incidents. Iorpuu urged local and international partners to continue supporting efforts against the snake invasion.
In addition, he announced that the World Bank would soon start constructing 50 shelter units in the Nyihemba camp in Kwande Local Government Area, while plans are underway to launch IDP farm projects in Kwande, Logo, and Gwer-West LGAs.
