In commemoration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary, the nation’s most renowned fitness community, BENFIT International, recently held a 6000sec fitness session, bringing the citizens from all walks of life together.
Tagged ‘fit together’, the event, which held at the sports centre of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), featured popular Nigerian dancer, Kaffy, and Big Brother Naija star, Kemen, among others.
The fitness event, now regarded as the most constant fitness initiative in Nigeria, which has been holding every October 1, since 2016, had in attendance about 1000 fitness enthusiasts in the 2024 edition, whom are students, athletes, fitness trainers, and even beginners, who engaged in a wide range of fitness activities, from endurance runs to strength training and aerobics, particularly, health checks and education.
CEO BENFIT International, Mr Gbenga Akinpelu, in his address, noted that the yearly event has grown into a landmark celebration for both health and patriotism.
“The event has consistently inspired Nigerians to embrace a healthy lifestyle while celebrating the spirit of the nation. What started as a small community workout years ago has evolved into a large-scale affair, with participation numbers increasing yearly,” Akinpelu added.
While speaking on the theme of the event, ‘Unity in health’, he noted that “the theme symbolises the connection between physical fitness and national strength. And as the leading proponent of fitness events in Nigeria, this initiative continues to build momentum, pushing the boundaries of what fitness events in the country can achieve.”
“With every new edition, it reinforces its position as the nation’s go-to fitness celebration, motivating people to embrace fitness not just as a hobby but as a lifelong commitment, and as such, continuing to push Nigeria towards becoming a healthier, more active nation, uniting citizens around a common goal of wellness and patriotism,” he averred.
While commending the event, Kaffy described the event as a way of reconnecting Nigerians to their health amidst the country’s economic crisis.
According to her, “the event is a reflection of the resilience in Nigeria, both physically and mentally; and also an avenue to gather people together in one accord, which is also part of what independence stands for — unity. An event like this which highlights the importance of health and wellness is what Nigerians need now, and it’s amazing one.”
