An appeal was made to the 1815 corps members deployed to Delta State to become pioneers in upholding the nation’s hard-won democracy.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori conveyed this appeal during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2023 Batch C, Stream 1 orientation course in Issele Uku, Aniocha North Council Area of the state on Tuesday.
The governor highlighted that democracy and its principles require a spirit of compromise as well as the virtues of patience, tolerance, and dialogue.
Represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Tonkari Johnbul, the governor further stated, “Recognizing and respecting differing opinions are crucial for consensus-building in a diverse society like Nigeria. Therefore, we should be ready to make sacrifices to reap the full benefits of democracy.”
Oborevwori assured that his administration would prioritise meeting the welfare needs of the corps members throughout their one-year service. He urged them to be committed and contribute to the state’s development.
As young individuals, the governor emphasised that leadership bestows responsibility, urging the corps members to initiate ideas and policies aimed at achieving national cohesion and lifting the country to greater heights.
Previously, the State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, Mr Alao Olusegun Alaosebikan, disclosed that the three-week orientation programme aimed to instill national ideals in the members. He highlighted plans for intensive skills acquisition training and entrepreneurship development to make them self-reliant and potential employers during and after their service year.
Alaosebikan requested the provision of an ambulance to the state office due to the increasing number of corps members and for easier transportation of sick individuals to the Federal Medical Centre in Asaba. He also sought the reconstruction of the orientation camp’s perimeter fence.
While advising the corps members to represent their families and institutions well, Mr Olaosebikan expressed appreciation to the royal leader of the Issele Uku community, HRM Nduka Ezeagwuna, and his subjects for their hospitality towards NYSC staff and corps members.
The event’s highlight was the administration of the national pledge and oath of allegiance to the corps members by the state’s chief judge, Justice Theresa Daia, represented by Justice Celestina Dafe.
