Executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekeremor and Southern Ijaw Local Government Areas of Bayelsa State have announced the suspension of several prominent party members, including Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum, and David Lyon, the APC’s 2019 governorship candidate for the state.
The suspensions extend to two serving commissioners in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)-led Bayelsa State government who are also affiliated with the APC.
The action comes in response to allegations of anti-party activities and reports of factionalism within the party at the state level.
Mitin Eniekenemi, Chairman of the APC in Ekeremor Local Government Area, confirmed the suspension of Senator Lokpobiri and the Commissioner for Power, Engr. Karin Kumoko.
During a press briefing, Eniekenemi stated that the decision was made based on the findings of an internal disciplinary committee established under Article 21.3(1) of the APC Constitution.
In Southern Ijaw, the APC executives announced the suspension of David Lyon, along with the Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Barr. Peres Biewari, and six other members.
They were suspended for alleged anti-party activities and gross misconduct, particularly during the 2020 Bayelsa State bye-election.
The APC leadership indicated that investigations are ongoing, and further details regarding additional members implicated in anti-party activities will be disclosed once the inquiries are concluded.
