The governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has warned those inciting trouble and advocating for conflict in the Opu-Nembe community in Nembe Local Government Area ahead of the November 11th gubernatorial election that the government will take appropriate action against them, regardless of their status.
According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Daniel Alabrah, the governor issued the warning during a courtesy visit by members of the Nembe Se Congress to the Government House in Yenagoa on Friday.
The statement further explained that the governor emphasized that the government will not stand idly by while a few individuals disrupt the peace of the Nembe kingdom, particularly in the Bassambiri community.
He added that the actions of these unscrupulous elements would not hinder the government from carrying out projects in the area.
He emphasized that without peace, development would elude the people of the area, and everyone should work together to ensure peace in the Bassambiri community.
Governor Diri commended the Nembe Se Congress for their interest in the Nembe-Brass road, stating that he is encouraged by the group’s partnership with the state government to ensure the project is realized.
He urged other groups in the state to follow the congress’s example by showing interest in government projects and raising concerns through appropriate channels instead of engaging in criticisms on social media.
The governor also mentioned that aside from the economic benefits, the government embarked on the construction of the Nembe-Brass road to reduce travel time to communities in the area and lower the cost and risks associated with water transportation.
He expressed dissatisfaction with those politicizing the road project, stating that since news broke about the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited taking over the construction of the road, neither the company nor the federal government has taken any action.
In response to a request to upgrade school facilities in Nembe, the governor assured that the government is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to transform the education sector. He explained that the state’s educational focus is on science and vocational education to empower youths beyond mere certificates.
His words: “As a government, we will not sit back and allow anyone to make Nembe-Bassambiri ungovernable.
“Let me emphasize that those who have been playing politics with security in the area will be dealt with, regardless of their status.
“Like every other project we have undertaken, we will not abandon the Nembe-Brass road. The benefits of that road are significant.
“I would like to express my appreciation for your serious attention to the road project. We must move beyond playing politics with our development.
“Furthermore, since the issue of NNPC taking over the road construction came up, I have not seen any action from them.”
Earlier, the president of the Nembe Se Congress, Dr Ebiegberi Domo-Spiff, commended Governor Diri for initiating the Nembe-Brass road project. He called on the government to closely monitor the project by appointing a consultant with relevant expertise to ensure that it meets specifications and is completed within the scheduled timeframe.
Dr Domo-Spiff also appealed to the government to provide ferry boats to improve water transportation in the Nembe and Brass areas and ensure strict compliance with maritime laws to enhance safety on the waterways.
He also requested a campus of the Bayelsa Medical University in the area.
In response, the governor stated that he will examine the law establishing the institution to determine if there is provision for a multi-campus structure.
