…gives each beneficiary N20,000 to start
Bauchi State office of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has trained and empowered 100 youths in small businesses to enable them become self-employed.
The 100 selected youths were drawn from Yelwan Duguri in Alkaleri LGA and were trained in making awara, donought, buns and other snacks for quick food based on the needs of the community.
The training was part of the activities marking the 2025 International Youth Day (IYD) with the theme: “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond”.
The event was organised by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in collaboration with the State Office of the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA).
The 100 selected youths were given the sum of N20000 each to enable them start off their preferred small businesses with the community in order to reduce unemployment rates.
Speaking at the ceremony, Director-General, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Lydia J. Shehu, stated that the training was part of the SDGs office to eradicate poverty among the people especially those on the rural areas in line one of the goals.
According to her, “The token amount disbursed was given by the State Government as support to the beneficiaries in line with the priority of the Governor, Sen Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed to reduce unemployment and poverty rate in the state.”
She added that the beneficiaries were trained on simple one-man business in order to make it easy for them to start off and excel.
The DG assured that the beneficiaries will be closely monitored to ensure that they actually engage in the chosen business in order to serve as example to others.
Also speaking, State Coordinator of the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA), Deborah Tabara, commended the SDGs Director-General for her efforts in leading the State on the path of achieving the goals of the SDGs.
She particularly commemded her for been able to get the funding from the State Government saying that it was indeed a great achievement in the effort to get the youths really engaged.
Deborah Tabara thanked the State Governor, Sen Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed for approving the release of the fund as well as other counterpart funding for the good of the State.
She warned the beneficiaries, particularly the males among them not use the token amount for any other things other than the starting of a small business which will be used to support his family and the community.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke, commemded the office of the SDGs and UNFPA for the training and support for the to establish small businesses for the growth and development of the community.
They promised to utilise the money given for the purpose having received the required training from the experts.
