Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has emphasized the training of youths in self-discipline and self-reliance for a better society.
The Governor sought the support of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) in training adolescents to address immoral behavior in society.
Speaking at the closing of the 80th edition of the National Islamic Vacation Course held at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi on Wednesday, the Governor expressed concern that society is seriously afflicted with numerous challenges spreading to almost every aspect of its existence.
Represented by his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Auwal Jatau, Bala Mohammed applauded the leadership of the MSSN for organizing the week-long intensive program, where young Muslim adolescents were trained in both moral and qualitative education.
He also commended the MSSN for organizing such a program, complementing government efforts to ensure an egalitarian society.
Bala Mohammed stressed the need for other sister religious organizations to emulate the MSSN and collaborate towards a better society.
The Governor also highlighted that the security of lives and property of citizens is a major priority of his administration because without it, there can be no governance.
He noted that managing security always requires a moral and religious approach to instill self-discipline, healthy competition, and self-reliance in youth.
According to him, “Empowering youths would ensure a more prosperous and inclusive society for all,” and he assured of the state government’s readiness to support and involve religious bodies in decision-making to reduce distrust and provide avenues for addressing grievances before they escalate.
He stressed that “Moral behavior is seriously lacking among youth, with illicit relationships and behaviors prevalent among adolescents.”
The Governor added that there are rampant cases of sexual harassment and aggression, as well as incidents of rape and kidnapping, mostly committed under the influence of drugs. He acknowledged the timely and highly appreciated intervention of the MSSN.
“Since my tenure began in 2019, our focus has been clear – to empower the youth and women economically and integrate them into governance,” he added.
He emphasized that thousands have received government support for business endeavors, promoting self-reliance as taught by Islam. The state’s potential is vast, and he urged the youth to seize and utilize opportunities available in various sectors, especially the agricultural value chain.
“In governance, the youth are not mere supporters but integral contributors. Over half of my cabinet and the State House of Assembly members are in their 30s and 40s, reflecting our commitment to mentor the next generation of leaders,” he added.
He further stated that empowering youths and women requires a united effort between the government and stakeholders.
The Governor also acknowledged the youth unemployment and related issues contributing to the increasing rate of security challenges in society. In efforts to overcome these challenges, the state has reintroduced the Societal Reorientation Programme to sensitize, educate, and mobilize the general public on moral ethics, soliciting support from individuals and organizations.
In a keynote address, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, mentioned that the theme of the course, “The Position of Muslims in National Politics and Economy: Where we are and where we ought to be,” was timely.
The Sultan tasked participants to make good use of the acquired knowledge for the promotion of Islamic education, contributing to addressing the numerous challenges facing the country.
The MSSN National Amir, Malam Shehu Usman Abubakar, noted that Muslim societies and youths have a vital role to play in national politics and the economy, emphasizing the need for youths to be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed.
