Bauchi environmental agency partners others to organise workshop on climate change effects

The Director General of the Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA), Dr. Ibrahim Kabir, has said that the issue of climate change needs to be discussed in order to bring out the salient features associated with it.

The DG was speaking when he moderated a Panel discussion by environment and climate experts during a one-day workshop on Climate Change, its effects, and mitigation measures held in Bauchi over the weekend.

According to him, the Idea of organising the workshop was to bring more heads together with the view to discussing the common goal of the impacts of climate change on the environment, which were hitherto considered an alien phenomenon but now are at our doorsteps.

Ibrahim Kabir further added that the gathering was to discuss, among other things, the role of coordination among all the stakeholders, be it the government, academia, Journalists, CSOs, religious and traditional institutions, as well as Community members.

To discuss numerous patterns of both local and international actions associated with climate change, its effects, and the commitments and roles of all the stakeholders in mitigating its effects.

The Commissioner in Charge of the Ministry of Housing and Environment, Rt. Hon. Danlami Ahmed Kawule, while welcoming the participants, said that the issue of climate change is an issue that every serious government must key into.

According to him, the issue became expedient based on the glaring effects of the concept in men’s day-to-day lives, and he reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting every initiative targeted towards mitigating the effects of concepts.

He expressed hope that the workshop will find ways to fast-track actions towards achieving the target objectives.

Danlami Ahmed Kawule also said the government has declared a state of emergency on the issue of cutting down trees to make timber, charcoal, or firewood and embarked on rigorous tree planting activities in the state to fight the glaring environmental challenges of desert encroachment, soil erosion, and water flooding.

He then assured the sustainability of these initiatives for the overall interests of the general public.

In her part, Dr Modesta Alozie, a lecturer from Sheffield University, England, said that the workshop was part of a research project on the effects of climate change in ordinary cities and the roles, commitments, and innovations that are not really popular among all the relevant actors, which are all geared towards mitigating the effects of the concept and relating them to the global commitments in addressing the issue.

The workshop identified some possible solutions, which include calling for proactive actions, the enactment of laws and policies by the government, embarking on rigorous afforestation activities from all the stakeholders, increasing awareness of climate change, its effects, and mitigation measures, the importance of collaboration and synergy to achieve sustainable development and the government’s support of all initiatives towards achieving the desired objectives.
