Bauchi: Community leaders, groups unveil plan for women inclusion in governance

Community leaders, youths and women groups in Bauchi and Ganjuwa Local Government Areas of Bauchi State have developed a plan of action for sustained advocacy for women’s inclusion in the decision-making process in running the affairs of their respective communities

This is part of the plan to strengthen advocacy for women to be included in decision-making processes being taken in their households and communities in the State.

The development was one of the outcomes of the recent capacity-building training workshop on ‘Women’s Inclusion in decision-making’ organised by Attah Sisters Helping Hand (ASHH) Foundation, a Bauchi-based Civil Society Organisation (CSO), with funding from Women for Women International (WFWI).

Mohammad M. Madaki who represented the Caretaker Chairman of Ganjuwa LGA and Mudi Marafa who represented the Village Head of Kafin Madaki all agreed that the Idea of involving women in decision-making processes at the community, LG and State level was a welcome development.

They equally agreed that women’s inclusion in the scheme of things will bring in fresh ideas as long as it does not go contrary to religious teachings and cultural norms and values.

Participants at the workshop which included Eleven Hamlet Heads, along with youths, 20 women and two persons with disabilities, at a group exercise also developed action plans that could fast-track the mainstreaming of women in decision-making.

Earlier in a goodwill message, Bauchi State Program Coordinator of Women for Women International (WFWI ) Mrs Naomi Goyuat said that the workshop would increase participants’ understanding of gender-inclusive in decision-making processes in the communities.

She also said that such capacity training would support women with the requisite knowledge to actively participate in the peacebuilding and decision-making process.

While calling on the participants to contribute actively during the workshop, Mrs Goyuatt said that WFWI is hopeful that the training would equip the participants with practical skills and strategies to advocate for gender equality and women empowerment in their respective communities
