In an effort to bring an end to the Indiscriminate parking of vehicles and waste disposal along the newly constructed Muda Lawal Market in Bauchi metropolis, the State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) has held an interaction with the leadership of the market in order to map out strategies on how to curtail the hardship and nuisance experienced by motorists and other road users around the market.
The meeting also discussed the unwholesome activities of hawkers, mostly wheelbarrows and truck pushers who have deliberately occupied the pedestrian walkways of the road by displaying their wares, which also contributed to the slow movement of traffic, causing a lot of havoc and contributed to waste littering on the road.
The Director General of the Agency Dr Ibrahim Kabir, who chaired the interaction said that the purpose of the meeting was to among other things brainstorm on sustainable solutions and ensure the cleanliness of the market.
It was also aimed at bringing an end to the activities of the petty traders who have turned the pedestrian walkways into places of displaying goods which he said the agency will not allow to continue.
He also emphasized on the involvement of all the stakeholders to discuss and adopt a comprehensive strategy for waste management in the identified markets (businesses) within the catchment, while outlining the specific nature of waste generated in their respective commodities.
On the indiscriminate parking of vehicles on the road, the meeting observed the failure of the enforcement team earlier assigned with the responsibility of ensuring orderliness on the road.
It called for the reintroduction of their activities to ease the hardship faced by motorists, banning the wares display was considered as the most appropriate in the interim and in the long run, providing for an alternative parking space in the market.
Other issues raised and discussed at the meeting were the identification of commercial activities along the road and the nature of their waste, assessing and proposing a suitable location for a waste collection centre, and compiling a list of waste collectors that will be engaged to ensure the cleanliness of the road among others.
