THE University of Lagos, UNILAG, Akoka, has debunked the claim by the Lagos zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), accusing the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of the university, Dr Wale Babalakin, of handedness and unnecessary meddling in the affairs of the institution.
The university said the accusation was baseless and untrue.
This defence was contained in a statement signed by the Registrar of the university, Mr. Oladejo Azeez, and made available to newsmen on Friday.

According to the university, that Babalakin held a meeting with members of senate in the university’s senate chamber is not an offence, more so that two of his predecessors, Aare Afe Babalola and the late Deacon Gamaliel Onosode also held similar meetings during their tenures at the same venue.
“That he also held a town hall meeting with all members of staff of the university when he assumed office with other council members in attendance is in order more so that such meeting was for the good of the entire university,” the university also pointed out.
The Registrar also said that for the council to absolve the Director of Sport of the university, Dr Cecilia Arinze, of 10 out of the 11 allegations leveled against her by another member of staff was not sufficient to dismiss her from the service of the university where she has put in 30 years.
While disclosing that Babalakin has never drawn any allowance nor financial benefit since assumption of office instead of spending his personal resources for the university, he said the pro-chancellor had all along been acted within the law and tradition of the university and therefore deserves a commendation and not condemnation as ASUU had done.
