THE Obafemi Awolowo Foundation has announced the establishment of a new leadership initiative aimed at nurturing ethical young leaders across Africa and the diaspora, even as it disclosed that the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership will not be awarded in 2026.

The announcement was made on Friday by the Foundation’s Executive Director, Ambassador Dr Olatokunbo Awolowo Dosumu, during her welcome address at the 2026 Obafemi Awolowo Memorial Lecture held at Efunyela Hall in Ikenne, Ogun State.

Speaking at the gathering, Awolowo Dosumu said the annual memorial lecture has remained a platform not only for remembering the ideals of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, but also for interrogating contemporary questions of leadership, social justice, intellectual engagement, and public service.

She noted that the event provides an opportunity for reflection and recommitment to the principles that defined Awolowo’s public life.

Awolowo Dosumu warmly welcomed the chairman of the occasion, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, describing him as a global statesman whose lifelong commitment to principled diplomacy, constitutionalism and ethical public life continues to inspire confidence.

Anyaoku, who also chairs the selection committee of the Awolowo Prize for Leadership, was commended for guiding the process with integrity and discernment.

Awolowo Dosumu also spoke on the guest lecturer, Professor Wale Adebanwi, whom she described as one of the earliest scholars to undertake rigorous academic study of Awolowo’s life and ideas.

According to her, Adebanwi’s scholarship has helped situate Awolowo within the wider currents of African political thought and intellectual history, ensuring that his legacy remains the subject of serious intellectual engagement rather than mere remembrance.

Special recognition was equally accorded to the Foundation’s patron, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, whose presence at the ceremony, Awolowo Dosumu said, added moral and symbolic weight to the gathering.

She described the traditional ruler as a custodian of culture and a respected national voice whose wise counsel has continued to enrich the work of the Foundation.

The Executive Director explained that the Awolowo Memorial Lecture remained one of the organisation’s most significant platforms for stimulating discourse on leadership and nation-building in Nigeria and Africa.

She expressed appreciation to dignitaries, traditional rulers and participants who attended the lecture and contributed to the intellectual and moral engagement the forum represents.

On the status of the Awolowo Prize for Leadership, Awolowo Dosumu disclosed that although the award was conceived as a biennial honour to recognise individuals whose lives exemplify integrity, courage, competence and transformative impact in public life, only four recipients have emerged in the 14 years since its inception. This, she said, reflected the Foundation’s commitment to maintaining the high standards associated with the prize.

She revealed that after careful reflection, the Foundation had resolved that the prize would not be awarded this year.

The decision, she explained, was not due to hesitation but rather a demonstration of fidelity to the exacting criteria that define the honour.

However, Awolowo Dosumu announced that the period of reflection had prompted the Foundation to consider expanding its recognition framework.

According to her, plans are underway to introduce sector-specific, second-tier Awolowo awards designed to honour individuals who have made outstanding contributions in different fields of endeavour.

She said these proposed recognitions would allow the Foundation to spotlight excellence and integrity across diverse sectors of society while remaining faithful to the core ideals that shaped Awolowo’s legacy.

Details of the new awards framework, she added, will be released later in the year when nominations for the next cycle open.

The highlight of the address was the announcement of the Obafemi Awolowo Future Leaders Fellowship, a new initiative designed to raise a generation of ethical and visionary young leaders across Africa and the global diaspora.

The fellowship, Awolowo Dosumu explained, is inspired by Awolowo’s enduring commitment to principled governance, social justice and human development through education.

She noted that although young Africans today face economic uncertainty and widening social inequalities, they also possess remarkable talent, global connectivity and innovative ideas.

What many require, she said, is structured mentorship and a leadership framework rooted in strong values. The fellowship programme is intended to bridge that gap by linking leadership ideals with practical governance experience.

Participants in the programme, she said, will engage with leadership philosophy, receive mentorship and collaborate on projects addressing real societal challenges while building a network of future leaders shaped by Awolowo’s ideals.

She said admission into the fellowship will be competitive and merit-based, with applications expected from young people aged between 20 and 35 across Nigeria and beyond.

Awolowo Dosumu expressed optimism that each cohort would emerge with greater ethical clarity, stronger leadership capacity and the ability to make measurable impact in their various fields.

She added that the programme is also intended to make Awolowo’s ideas more relevant to a new generation of changemakers.

She called on individuals and organisations that believe in service-oriented leadership to partner with the Foundation, stressing that investment in leadership development remains one of the most meaningful ways of preserving and extending the values associated with Awolowo’s legacy.

Awolowo Dosumu reminded participants that the memorial lecture ultimately serves as a call to intellectual reflection and moral responsibility.

At a critical moment in history, she said, societies must examine the quality of leadership they demand and the standards to which leaders should be held.

The 2026 lecture gathered political leaders, scholars, traditional rulers and public intellectuals who assembled to reflect on the enduring relevance of Awolowo’s ideas to contemporary governance and nation-building.
