Assembly laments deplorable roads in Oyo

The Oyo State House of Assembly has lamented a number of unmotorable roads in the State.

The call on the governor Seyi Makinde led government to fix roads in the state was the subject matter of two motions moved on the floor of the state Assembly, at Tuesday’s plenary.

In his own motion, Honourable Akintunde Olajide of Lagelu constituency decried the deplorable condition of the 3.5km Wofun-Kute-Jenriyin road among other roads that needed urgent intervention.

Akintunde said the call became expedient because the several unmotorable roads in the State continued to cripple the socio-economic activities and business of several residents of the State.

He particularly mentioned that several persons had also lost their lives plying the Wofun-Kute-Jenriyin road.

Akintunde said that the road becomes completely impassable and comes a death trap especially when it rains.

Akintunde said: “The condition of this road up to Kute/Jenriyin from Wofun junction which is about 3.5km calls for serious concern and immediate rehabilitation.

“The economic importance of this road to the residents of the area cannot be underestimated. The road serves not less than 17 communities and it leads to Olorunda-Abaa and to Yawiri, in Akobo.

“The road is presently in a terrible condition and has become almost impassable. All the box culverts have overflowed with no sign of drainage on both sides of the road.

“The road is ruined completely to the extent that no one can say specifically the number of lives of Okada riders with their passengers that had been lost on this road.”

Similarly, Honourable A. A. Ogundare of Ogooluwa/Surulere constituency charged the Makinde government to fix the Iresaapa-Iresaadu phase 2 road, Mowolowo-Iwo Ate phase 1 road and Ipeba to Ajaawa road construction site.

Though he said he was aware that approvals had been given for the three road projects, Ogundare said it was baffling that the requisite funding never followed.

The motion also asked the Makinde government to prioritize the construction of 16.7km Aawe-Apaara-Apetu-Emi Abata- Oba river- Iwo ate/ Ife Odan road.

The Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin led Assembly, in its resolution, appealed to the governor to empower the Local Government to enable them rehabilitate and fix trunk ‘C’ roads.

This, the Assembly, noted will enable the grassroots level enjoy dividends of democracy, especially under the Makinde government.

In various contributions, lawmakers mentioned several bad roads in their various constituencies, urging the State Governor, through the State Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Oyo State Road Maintenance Agency, to urgently implement plans to fix bad roads across the State.
