Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Sanwo-Olu donates N75m to Nigerian legion

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday donated N75 million to the State Council of the Nigerian Legion as part of his government’s commitment to the welfare of Legionnaires and the families of fallen heroes.

Governor Sanwo-Olu made the announcement during the Appeal Fund and Launch of the Year 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem, held at the Lagos House, Marina.

The governor launched the emblem and Appeal Fund ahead of the January 15, 2025, commemoration of Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

The ceremony was attended by the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Barr. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin; members of the State Executive Council; Service Commanders and the Commissioner of Police; and officials of the Nigerian Legion.

Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to the ongoing welfare of Legionnaires, particularly the elderly and the families of fallen heroes.

He commended the members of the Nigerian Legion and the fallen heroes for their service to the country, assuring them that Legionnaires would not be left out of the various programs of his government.

In response to the appeal made by the Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion, DCG Akeem Olawale Wolimoh, the governor promised to donate some housing units in the Prince Abiodun Ogunleye Housing Estate in Ikorodu to the state chapter of the Legion, in order to provide shelter to the vulnerable and elderly among them.

He also promised to provide security vehicles and equipment to support the Nigerian Legion, who expressed their continued readiness to contribute to the protection of lives and property in Lagos State.

Earlier, DCG Wolimoh praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for his welfare efforts and concern for retired officers and the families of fallen heroes in the state.

He also mentioned that the N50 million donated to the state chapter of the Nigerian Legion last year during the launch of the emblem had been judiciously used for the welfare of members and the families of fallen heroes.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, along with his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Barr. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro; Chief of Staff, Mr. Tayo Ayinde; Commissioner for Home Affairs, Hon. Olanrewaju Layode; some members of the State Executive Council; and heads of security agencies in the state, were, during the event, decorated with the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem.
