Home country to the late Pope, Argentina is mourning the loss of Pope Francis, with the people of Buenos Aires, his hometown, gathering for a special mass to honor the former cardinal they once knew as Jorge Bergoglio.
Born in Buenos Aires in 1936, Francis served as the city’s archbishop for 15 years before ascending to the papacy.
At a bus stop in Buenos Aires, dozens of mourners gathered to travel to the Plaza de Mayo, one of the Argentine capital’s most iconic sites, for a mass commemorating Pope Francis.
Onboard one of the buses arranged for the occasion, two women told CNN that Francis, even after becoming pope, “would still send letters back to his archdiocese every year, using a fax machine.”
The buses, which Francis often rode during his years in the city, were specially organized today by authorities to transport mourners to the service.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away in Rome, Francis has reached his final resting place.
