Apple Music yesterday released this month’s Africa Now DJ Mix featuring Afrobeats DJ and entrepreneur, DJ OBI (real name Obinna Levi Ajuonuma), who has diligently spread the gospel of good music coming out of Africa by literally taking Afrobeats to every corner of the world.
“It’s a great time to see the impact African music is making on different stages worldwide,” he tells Apple Music. “This mix is a representation of the wealth of talent that Africa has and we are constantly showcasing to the world.”
Born and raised in Lagos, DJ OBI had his heart set on working in the entertainment industry from a young age, influenced heavily by his father who worked in TV and radio. However after attending one DJ Jimmy Jatt’s events, and being completely mesmerised by the way the iconic Afrobeats hip hop DJ controlled the music and the crowd, DJ OBI knew that he needed to learn how to do exactly that.
After returning to Nigeria from the U.S. in 2012, DJ OBI found it difficult to break into this music scene, but that all changed after he broke the Guinness World Record for longest DJ set in 2016, spinning for an incredible 10 days straight. The global lockdown in 2020 saw him create Obi’s House, a virtual live session that then became a physical event once restrictions were lifted. Today, Obi’s House is the fastest growing party in Lagos and a cultural hub that some of the biggest names in music frequently.
