The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is resorting to political intimidation and violence, fueled by its fear of the ADC’s growing popularity.
The accusation follows a recent incident where a political gathering in a church in Alimosho, Lagos, was reportedly disrupted.
In a statement on his X handle, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, condemned the incident, calling the alleged invasion of a church venue a “new low” for the APC.
He accused the ruling party of showing no respect for sacred spaces and turning the Nigeria Police Force into its “Gestapo wing.”
He wrote “APC is really scared of the growing popularity of the ADC across the country, and it appears that the only response that they have is physical assaults and intimidation.
“Yesterday’s invasion of a Church, the venue of an ADC event in Alimosho, Lagos State, is a new low — showing that the APC respects nothing and holds nothing sacred, not even a Church.
Under the APC, the Nigerian Police Force is being turned to the Gestapo wing of the ruling party.”
The ADC’s statement comes amid a series of claims by the party of political persecution, including a violent attack on former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and other ADC leaders in Kaduna and the sealing of the party’s office.
According to reports from media outlets, the event in Alimosho was a meeting where Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, a prominent opposition figure, officially joined the ADC.
The event was reportedly marred by the presence of a heavy police presence and a reported attempt by suspected thugs to disrupt the gathering.
The Lagos State Police Command has since denied any political bias, stating that its presence was for “public safety and crime prevention.”
The APC Lagos State spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, has also dismissed the allegations as “baseless,” stating that the ruling party is not threatened by the ADC.
