Former presidential aide, Laolu Akande, says the All Progressives Congress (APC) is more structurally organised than opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Akande said, “I think APC has better arrangements.”
He admitted that the ruling party has its own internal challenges but insisted the opposition lacks structure and political identity.
Akande criticised opposition parties for focusing solely on removing President Bola Tinubu without offering policy alternatives.
“The characters at the forefront are not the ones that can get the job done. Nigerians would not be inspired by the same old personal vendetta politics,” he said.
He added that although new leadership is needed in Nigeria, many opposition figures still represent the old political class.
“We need new faces, but they still have old folks,” Akande said.
However, he praised activist and politician Omoyele Sowore for trying to reshape political conversations in a more constructive direction.
Akande also addressed a recent comment by Labour Party vice presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed, who said Peter Obi could run in 2027 without him.
He said the remark points to deeper cracks within the Labour Party.
“If the coalition is serious, Datti should be at the forefront to assure Nigerians of real change,” he said.
Akande criticised the LP for its unclear manifesto and leadership structure, questioning the strength of the Obi–Baba-Ahmed alliance.
On APC matters, Akande said a new party chairman would help President Tinubu strengthen internal unity.
“I think it is reasonable that there would be a new chairman today,” he said, referring to the party leaders’ meeting at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday.
He acknowledged that the APC is under pressure, but said its direction is still clearer than that of the opposition.
“There’s a visible onslaught toward the APC, but it’s easier to see where things are headed within the ruling party,” he said.
He described the opposition’s recent moves as “largely superficial.”
Akande concluded by calling for greater civic engagement and a shift to issue-based politics.
He urged a national focus on poverty reduction, anti-corruption, and institutional reforms.
