The All Progressives Congress Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) has explained the heavy security presence at its national secretariat.
Members of staff of the All Progressives Congress returned to work on Monday to sight heavy police presence along the sprawling Blantyre street in Abuja, where the national Secretariat of the party is located.
Staff were being allowed in while visitors were frisked before being allowed into the party Secretariat.
National Secretary of the CECPC, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe at a session with newsmen dropped the hint that policemen were invited to strengthen security at the party national secretariat.
Senator Akpanudoedehe said the party national leadership took the measure against the background of a security report that certain aggrieved chieftains were planning to stage a protest and in the process instigate violence.
He said the initiative to fortify the APC national secretariat was to prevent the party from being embarrassed by those plotting to organise protests
He said: “The police is here to strengthen the leadership Governor of Buni, the caretaker chairman of the APC. What do I mean by that? Whenever you read a security situation, whenever we are privy to a security report, it is incumbent on our part to strengthen Secretariat so that we can protect the lives and property of APC members.
“APC cannot be embarrassed because this is a national government, therefore we take measures to foreshore any happenings, we cannot underestimate security reports. We cannot play down on it. We have a security report, we can’t take laws into our hands, you can’t expect us to call thugs to defend the national secretariat here. The right thing to do is to inform the police and the SSS that they may know that so so the thing has happened.
“We are going to take more measures. Another measure we want to take is that if you don’t have your face mask, because of the Delta variant. You will not be able to come to the National Secretariat. That doesn’t mean that the air force has taken over the Secretariat because of the extension of COVID-19. So that is what it is.
“For instance now if you have a protest and now you are a media man you may be killed or brutalised. It will be big news that somebody has been shot at the national Secretariat. It is our responsibility as managers of this party to put measures to protect your lives and property.”
