Alhaji (Dr) Ilyasu Musa Kwankwaso, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, has urged politicians to recognise and commend recent achievements in combating insecurity in Nigeria, alongside their critiques of government actions.
During a press interaction on Friday, Kwankwaso, a former three-time commissioner for rural and community development in Kano, emphasised the importance of acknowledging positive strides made in the fight against terrorism, particularly in Sokoto and Zamfara states.
He criticised leading politicians for solely condemning President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its perceived failures while neglecting to celebrate its successes in addressing security challenges.
Kwankwaso pointed out the significant efforts of the state minister for defence, Bello Matawalle, who has been active in Sokoto and has achieved notable progress in combating terrorism. He noted that several routes in the state, previously abandoned for eight years due to insecurity, are now being reopened.
“Many successes have been made in fighting terrorism in Sokoto, but these achievements often go unmentioned by influential politicians who fail to commend the federal government,” he stated.
He added, “President Tinubu has directed the minister for defence to focus on militarising high-risk areas. This is an achievement.” Kwankwaso mentioned the establishment of military bases, such as in Gundumi, which will patrol previously closed roads.
He called on northern elders and politicians to support the president’s initiatives, emphasising that the government is genuinely addressing the insecurity crisis. He highlighted recent actions by Matawalle, including a warning to bandits and the launch of “Operation Fansan Yamma,” aimed at dispersing terrorists in affected regions.
Kwankwaso also urged state governors to effectively utilise the funds released by the president from the subsidy withdrawal, stating that proper allocation of these resources could significantly alleviate the struggles of the populace.
He concluded by commending Vice President Kashim Shetima for his commitment to achieving the goal of eradicating terrorism.
