Amidst agitation for retention of the position of the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress in the North Central, a group in the zone, Coalition of North Central APC Youth Leaders and Support Groups have backed former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for the office.
Former national chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu from Nasarawa State in the North Central State resigned from the office last week.
The Progressive Governors Forum, ( PGF) under the leadership of Imo State governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, had since endorsed Ganduje for the seat.
On Tuesday, the seven state chairmen of the party in the North West zone at a meeting held in Kaduna also backed the former Kano state governor for the office.
Speaking with journalists on Thursday at a news conference in Abuja, National Convener of Coalition of North Central APC Youth Leaders and Support Groups, Comrade Okpokwu Ogenyi, said the former Kano state governor ” is a party man who has distinguished himself as an intellectual of high repute.”
The group also argued that the agitation that the office be retained in the North Central was misplaced as it noted that the region has produced several national chairmen of ruling political parties in the party.
Ogenyi also told journalists that zoning was not entrenched in the APC Constitution.
He said:” It is our profound joy to address you today as we discuss the future of our great Party, the All Progressives Congress APC.
“The North Central States consists of Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kwara, Kogi, Niger and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. The zone is a political hub owing to its political dominance ranging from the Military government down to the current civilian rule.
“We the people of North Central have occupied National Chairmanship position of all ruling parties in the Country and have done well in terms of party administration. We are proud to say that a Chairman from the zone led the party to victory in the last residential election.
“Today, our father who was the National Chairman of the APC has resigned his position thereby making the post vacant. As you maybe aware, there is no vacuum in governance so a competent hand must be employed in order to over our party forward.
“It is on this note that we wholeheartedly endorse Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as the National Chairman of our great Party, APC. Abdullahi Ganduje is a party man who has distinguished himself as an intellectual of high repute.
“As North Central Youths, one maybe tempted to ask why we should not clamour for the position to be retained in the zone. The truth is, we have contributed our quota and wish other zones to be also given the opportunity to participate in the Party’s administration.
“We the North Central people are far above trivialism, greed and selfishness when it comes to the National interest. We firmly believe that Dr Ganduje is the best man for the job at this moment. Remember, Ganduje served Kano State for eight years and he performed credibly well. Kano under Ganduje became an example of development not only in Nigeria but Africa at Large.
“We are optimistic that APC under Ganduje shall complement the implementation of President Tinubu’s blueprint for the benefit of Nigerians.”
