The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensuring a safe and secure environment for learning as part of national efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Speaking at the national dialogue on ‘Education: A Panacea in Achieving the SDGs’ organised by the Youth Coalition for Education in Nigeria (YOCEN) at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja, on Wednesday, CP Orutugu, who was represented by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, gave the assurance.
The CP stressed that “Security is a key enabler of quality education, gender equality, and sustainable growth.”
He highlighted the Inspector General of Police’s safe school initiative as a proactive measure to protect schools, students, teachers, and staff nationwide
The CP also cited other police-led interventions such as the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), anti-crime patrols, and sensitisation programmes in schools, which he said continue to safeguard vulnerable groups, particularly children and young women.
The event, which brought together stakeholders from government, civil society, and the private sector, underscored the importance of education as a driver of development and a foundation for meeting the UN 2030 Agenda.
In recognition of his professional contributions and public engagement, SP Ikenga was named 2025 Most Outstanding Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Year by YOCEN.
The award was presented as part of the group’s efforts to celebrate individuals and institutions advancing education and national development.
The Anambra State Police Command expressed appreciation for the honour and pledged to deepen collaboration with education stakeholders in Anambra and across the country in promoting peace, justice, and sustainable development.
YOCEN, a pan-African youth initiative, was founded following resolutions of the All-African Students Union’s 3rd Annual Youth/Students Summit in Monrovia, Liberia, in 2019, with a mission to mobilise Africa’s next generation for continental progress.
