Anambra govt seals community children’s home over illegal activities

The Anambra State Government has sealed off Arrow of God Community Children’s Home, domiciled in Onitsha, the commercial city of the state, over illegal activities.

The State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Hon. Ify Obinabo, who disclosed this to Journalists in Awka on Tuesday, said about 19 children were recovered from the home during the raid.

The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the Orphanage home was sealed off after a report made the rounds on social media alleging that the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare is involved in the illegal adoption of a new-born baby in collaboration with one of the registered homes in the state.

Acting on the report, the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare embarked on a raid on the Arrow of God Community Children’s Home, which they sealed off with 19 children recovered from the operation and a newborn baby girl with the Proprietor and Staff at large.

Speaking further with the press at her office, Hon. Obinabo stated that the ministry is not aware of any adoption with the orphanage home and has never approved of such as claimed by the Proprietor of the Orphanage Home, Rev. D.C. Ogo, whose whereabouts are unknown as of the time of the raid.

Obinabo averred that there were irregularities in the adoption process, which included the absence of three signatories comprising the Honourable Commissioner, Permanent Secretary, and Head of Child of the Ministry.

She also informed me that since my assumption of office, all applications for court orders of adoption go through the designated children, sexual and gender-based violence magistrate court in Awka, as opposed to what was disclosed in the reports making the rounds, as the aim is to preserve the best interest of the child now and in the future.

Madam Commissioner advised citizens of the state who wish to go through the adoption process to be mindful of unscrupulous elements now parading themselves as Ministry Consultants who help facilitate adoption, as the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare has not engaged the services of any consultant.

She urged Anambra residents to report any suspicious and illegal activities found in any orphanage home to the Ministry or the nearest police while assuring that the proprietor of the Arrow of God Orphanage Home would be made to face the law in no distant time.
