Anambra government drivers association elect officers

Drivers and Plant Operators, Coordinating Council of Technical Workers Association, Anambra State have elected a 9-man Executive Council to pilot affairs of the union over the next three years.

The officers are Mr Daniel Echezona, Chairman, Mr Udegwu David, Vice-Chairman, Mr Madukaife Ebenezer, Secretary, Okoye Emmanuel, Assistant Secretary and Bernard Obiagbaoso, Financial Secretary.

Others are Benjamin Okoronkwo (Treasurer), Ikenna Muozie (Publicity Secretary), Nwabuze Cane (Welfare), Francis Okoye, (Provost).

Inaugurating the officers at Awka, Anambra State Head of Service (HOS), Barr Harry Uduh urged them to be diligent, transparent and prioritise the welfare of state drivers.

Uduh, who was represented by Director, Training (HOS) office, Dr Nwandu Obiano thanked the drivers for their peaceful conduct during the election.

She enjoined them to cooperate with the new leaders and avoid mudslinging.

“The executive is a service body to other members and as such, have big tasks of organising others by your activities and utterances.

“Be polite to all of them and lead them by example. Do not dent the image that you suffered to build and do not allow division in your executive.

“We shall support you in addressing some of your challenges,’’ she re-assured.

In an acceptance speech, Chairman of the association, Mr Echezona said the election was a step in the right direction toward their liberation in the state civil service.

He noted that drivers were confronted with many challenges and this was their reasons for coming together under an umbrella.

“Imagine a situation where political appointees assault some drivers in the cause of carrying out their legitimate responsibility.

“We shall review the token being given to drivers as non-accident bonus annually and appealed for a review of drivers’ overtime, which was last reviewed in 1994.

“The issue of driver’s licence will also be looked into.

“As it stands now, drivers renew their licences from their salaries and we think that there should be the need for outfit allowance so that drivers can look good.

“We cannot achieve all these without your support,’’ he appealed.

He, then, commended the HOS for his commitment and tenacity in the discharge of his administrative responsibility.
