An elderly woman has been paraded half-naked in the Igboukwu community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State over allegations that she killed a 15-year-old boy.
A video of the parade has gone viral on social media, showing community members leading her around and cursing her.
In the video, the woman is seen with fresh palm fronds woven around her neck, a symbol in Igboland indicating that someone has committed a sacrilegious act.
A young man narrating in the video claimed that the woman had tied up the boy with a rope, leading to his death.
He said, “She committed sacrilege. She tied up a small boy and caused his death. She was caught when she went to the boy’s grave to take sand (possibly to perform rituals that would exonerate her), when she was caught.”
It is unclear what action the community took after parading her.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the state police command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that no report of the incident had been brought to the police’s attention.
He promised to make extensive enquiries to verify that the video is not an old one being circulated by detractors.
Some residents of Igboukwu who were reached said they were not aware of the incident.
