THE Ambrose Alli University (AAU) Ekpoma, Edo State, will this weekend confer academic degrees on 9,186 graduands of the institution in the ongoing 20th Convocation Ceremony of the Edo State-owned tertiary institution.
A breakdown of the degrees showed that 8,340 graduands will bag first degrees, 354 will go home with diploma degrees, while 492 will be conferred with postgraduate degrees, all covering the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 academic sessions.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Ignatius Onimawu, at a press briefing on Monday, said a convocation lecture to be delivered by Dr Robson Momoh, was held on Wednesday, 19 October.
Professor Onimawu also disclosed that only one person, the Chief Executive Officer of Channels TV, John Momoh, will be honoured with a doctorate degree of Business Administration (Honoris Causa) of AAU, praising the communication guru for accepting the honorary degree.
He said that the convocation, which started last Friday with a Jumat Service and an interdenominational Church Service on Sunday, will end on Saturday with the award of the higher and honorary degrees, an event that is expected to be graced by eminent personalities including Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole; Chancellor of the university, HRH (Dr) Yahaya Abubakar, the Etsu Nupe; and the Edo State governor-elect, Mr Godwin Obaseki.
The vice chancellor, who took over the helm of affairs of the university on 12 May, 2016, said his government has recorded achievements in the areas of increasing the institution’s IGR to complement monthly subventions from government, reduction in social ills such as cultism, examination malpractices and sexual harassment, e-administration and e-learning and collaboration with Canadian universities for academic and cultural exchange.
On courses de-accredited this year, the vice chancellor noted that efforts were being made to remedy the shortfalls that brought about the de-accreditation, disclosing that six out of 32 courses offered by the university were de-accredited.
He listed some of the ongoing projects in the university as Faculty of Laboratory Science, the Administrative Building, Faculty of Social Science and student hostels.
