Alleged plan to assassinate Gov Adeleke, careless talk — IGP Egbetokun

•decorates Newly Promoted Senior Police Officers

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has dismissed the allegation levelled against him by the Osun State chapter Of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over a plan to destabilise the state with orchestrated violence and assassinate Governor Ademola Adeleke, describing it as careless talk that deserved no response.

Speaking at the decorations of newly promoted senior police officers, Egbetokun said that he read about the the allegation but he refused to “dignify such absurdity which with a response that believed in challenging the distortion of facts.”

He, however, said that he would not allow the distorted facts against the Nigeria Police Force to go unchallenged.

According to him, “Statements that are clearly contrary to reasoning don’t deserve our response. I am too busy for careless talks. I will not respond to such absurdity.”

He further explained that he responded to the call of the Osun State Commissioner of Police for reinforcement when violence broke out in the state, noting “that the NPF has reinforced the Command, and there are enough men on the ground to ensure that there is law and order in that state and to ensure that there is no more break down of law and order in Osun State.”

IGP Egbetokun advised the people of Osun State to remain calm and go about their normal business and ensure that the rule of law prevails in the state. He said the state is calm and there is no more violence.

The Chairman, Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon Sunday Bisi, had on Wednesday at a press conference alleged that IGP Egbetokun deliberately deployed Special Forces to escort some miscreants into the local government councils in the state.

He further described his allegations “as nothing but a blatant coup and obviously one out of the many mapped-out plans to assassinate the Governor of our dear State, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, whose instruction to restore peace and order as the Chief Security Officer of Osun State, was flagrantly violated by Egbetokun.”

Bisi said the Executive Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke has been interfacing with Egbetokun, with the sole aim of ensuring peace after the fatal fracas on Monday, occasioned by forceful attempts by the sacked chairmen and councillors purportedly elected on the platform of opposition APC before the advent of PDP administration in the state.

“The whole world must warn and prevail on Mr Kayode Egbetokun to desist from being an enabler of orchestrated attempts on the life of our Governor. These plans we want to emphasise, have been on the cards of the APC in Osun State since the good people of Osun State voted them out of office in 2022.

“The desperation to get rid of Mr Governor and take over the State through whatever means possible has been rife and clear enough since APC was shut out of government in Osun.”

This came just as Egbetokun, on Thursday in Abuja, decorated 19 Senior Police Officers with their new ranks amidst cheers from families, friends, and well-wishers.

This was contained in a statement made available to news men in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

According to the statement, three Commissioners of Police were elevated to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police. AIG Garba Ahmed, AIG Nemi Edwin Osigoboka Iwo, and AIG Salman Garba Dogo.

In addition, 16 Deputy Commissioners of Police were decorated with the substantive rank of Commissioners of Police.

The decorated CPs include CP Cyriacus Enechukwu, CP Gombit Bangs, CP Rosemary Akpan, CP Ayodele Adeyemi, among others.

It stated that the Inspector-General of Police applauded the newly promoted officers and charged them to diligently discharge the responsibilities of their new ranks.

He urged them to leverage their extensive knowledge of policing in safeguarding the country, in strict adherence to the Rule of Law, as the Nigeria Police Force continues to emplace strategies toward a more secure nation and national development.

The event was graced by notable dignitaries, including Prince Ma Sani-Omolori; Former Clerk to the National AssemblyThe Ciroma of Ebira Land), Mr. Nebeolisa Anako; Former Permanent Secretary of the Police Service Commission, DIG Valentine Ntomchukwu(rtd.), as well as members of the Force Management Team, serving and retired Senior Police Officers, and families of the promotees.
