THE Alaawe of Awe in Oyo State, Oba Cornelius Abiola Taiwo, has commended the foresight of the founders of Awe High School for their initiative 70 years ago, saying that decision has in no small way aided the development of the community.
The school was officially opened on March 20, 1954 by the then Minister of Education of the Western Region of Nigeria, Dr S.O. Awokoya.
Speaking during the activities to mark the 70th anniversary of the school, Oba Taiwo implored the management, staff and students of the school to imbibe the maintenance culture in order to sustain the infrastructure in the school.
The monarch thanked the Old Students Association for the renovation and construction of classrooms and provision of social amenities and academic materials for the school.
The national president of the Old Students Association, Mr Ayoola Mathew Olatunji, urged members not to relent in their efforts in order to make the school one of the best in the state and in the country as a whole.
Ayoola said the school played important roles in their lives and therefore, it is important to also give back for the benefit of the current students.
The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Salihu Adelabu, represented by the Permanent Secretary and Inspector-General for Education, Dr Tunde Aremu, said the state government will continue to focus on the development of the education sector in the state.
Principal of the school, Mrs Olabiyi Oyetade commended the state government for the result-oriented efforts in the education sector in the state.
She also thanked the former students for their support in creating a conducive environment for students to learn.
