Alaafin: Oba Owoade ready for traditional rites — Aide

Oba Akeem Owoade

Bode Durojaiye, an aide to the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has stated that all is now set for the mandatory traditional rites of the new Oyo monarch.

In a statement on Monday, Durojaiye explained that the rites would involve visits to specific houses where the monarch would offer sacrifices, make appeasements, and even spend nights in some locations to fulfil certain night rituals.

“As part of the processes, Alaafin Owoade would visit a number of houses to offer sacrifices, make appeasements, and even sleep over at some of the houses to carry out some night rites,” he said.

Following these rituals, the new Alaafin will proceed to Ipebi, a seclusion period within the palace where the final traditional rites will take place.

“After performing the traditional rites at some traditional homes in Oyo town, the new Alaafin will then enter Ipebi (seclusion) for the conclusion of the traditional rites within a secluded part of the Alaafin palace,” he stated.

He emphasised that the Ipebi rituals would mark the pinnacle of the traditional processes before the monarch is officially crowned.

“The ancestral rituals to be done during Ipebi would be the crescendo of rituals before the monarch is crowned Alaafin,” he reiterated.

Durojaiye further explained the significance of the Alaafin institution, describing it as a revered monarchy with deep historical roots.

“The institution inspires nothing short of reverence. The legendary feats of the Titan of Yorubaland in times past were blessings of oral history, with in-depth documentation of historical accomplishments,” he said.

He also assured that the coronation rites would be completed within the four-week period directed by Governor Seyi Makinde. “However, in continuation of the governor’s four weeks’ directive to conduct the coronation, the traditional rites will be concluded before then,” he assured.

Oba Owoade, who was recently presented with his certificate of appointment and staff of office by Governor Makinde in Ibadan, is expected to arrive in Oyo from Canada soon to commence the traditional processes.
