The traditional title holder of Ajiyan Sokoto, Alhaji Umar I. Ajiya, has denied the Ajiyan Sokoto governorship rumours circulating in some quarters that he is planning to contest the Sokoto governorship election in 2027.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Spokesman to Ajiyan Sokoto, Bashir Ahmad Danmalam, a copy of which was made available to The Punch on Monday night.
“It has come to our knowledge that part of the orchestrated plans being hatched is to circulate campaign posters with the picture of the Ajiyan Sokoto, insinuating that he is planning to contest for the Sokoto State governorship seat,” the statement said.

Danmalam described the speculation as “baseless, false, and unfounded,” urging the public to disregard it.
“We want to make it abundantly clear that Alhaji Umar I. Ajiya did not mandate any individual or group to print or circulate any posters on his behalf. He remains a loyal APC card-carrying member who is committed to the development and sustenance of democracy in the country,” he stated.
He blamed the Ajiyan Sokoto governorship rumours on “disgruntled elements” who, according to him, do not wish Ajiya well and are bent on causing disaffection between him and the Sokoto State Governor, Dr Ahmad Aliyu.
“Such insinuations are aimed at discrediting the traditional title holder, who has no plan to contest any elective position, let alone the Sokoto State governorship seat,” he said.
Danmalam stressed that Ajiya, having served in both the private and public sectors before retiring peacefully, has no political ambitions. Instead, he remains committed to supporting the present administration under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu in his efforts to uplift Nigeria.
He, therefore, urged the people of Sokoto State and Nigerians in general to disregard the Ajiyan Sokoto governorship rumours, warning that Ajiya would not hesitate to take legal action against individuals or groups attempting to cause enmity between him, the Sokoto State Governor, or the Federal Government.
“We call on members of the public, especially in Sokoto State, to ignore the mischief of those spreading these rumours, which are aimed at creating confusion in the state and the country,” Danmalam added.
