Ajia residents take complaints over proposed land acquisition to Makinde

Residents, particularly house owners in Ajia community, Inukan Local Council Development Area of Oyo State, on Sunday, took the advantage of the State governor, Mr Seyi Makinde’s visit to the community to express their displeasure over the proposed acquisition of some parts of the land in the community of which they bought and have built on.

Makinde had gone to Ajia, to attend the one-year remembrance service for Late Chief Theophilus Adeleke Akinyele, which was held at Anglican Church, Ajia.

The residents, who were bearing placards with various inscriptions such as: “Governor Seyi Makinde says something about the revocation of lands in Ajia”, People are dying about revocation in Ajia village, governor Makinde speaks up” and so on. The mission of the residents to get the attention was however thwarted by security operatives present on the church premises as they were chased away.

One of the residents, Alhaja Fausat Inaolaji, while narrating her ordeal told Tribune Online that: “We have been on this matter since February this year when we saw some people taking pictures of our lands and houses. Later, some people came and asked us to put down our names.

“When we became worried, those who sold lands to us, said that there are 44 acres of land in the community which has been given to the government by their fathers. As I am standing in front of you, my children who are based abroad sent money to me to buy two acres for them. The people who sold the land to me since 2013 have not for once disturbed me.

“It is only some acclaimed landowners in the village who sold part of the land to people. It was at that time I cried to the village head, he advised that we should fence the land, I have spent not less than three million Naira to fence the land.

“We are appealing to governor Seyi Makinde to please help us see into this matter, he should talk to us and he should not allow some people to use their selfish interest to affect his government. We are solidly behind him and we pray that his administration is successful.”

Another resident, Mr Muyideen Kareem, while speaking with the Tribune Online stated that: “When this community was a typical wilderness, none of the so-called indigenes of this town came to claim any land, it was after years of suffering to erect structures here that they said they are claiming their forefathers’ inheritance.

“We have been to the Ministry of Lands and Housing, we have written a series of letters, we have done a lot, but unfortunately, we are yet to receive any correspondence. So, we heard that the governor is coming today and that is why we are out to express our sadness over the proposed land acquisition. It is, however, surprising to see some security agents harrassing us, saying we should not carry placards that we should just go away.”
