Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Tuesday approved the disbursement of ₦350 million for the 2025 scholarship and bursary scheme for students of Ondo State origin in higher institutions across the country.
The package, which will benefit about 12,000 students, covers five categories, including medical students, law students, and students with disabilities.
The ₦350 million approved by the state governor is an improvement on that of last year, in which ₦335 million was disbursed to 11,200 students.
In 2024, Governor Aiyedatiwa increased the annual bursary from ₦10,000 to ₦20,000 per student, while students with disabilities received ₦75,000 each and scholarship awardees received ₦100,000 each.
Speaking on the new approval, the governor said education remains a cornerstone of development and the key to unlocking the potential of the youth.
Aiyedatiwa emphasised that his administration recognises education as the foundation of development, stressing that it is vital to unlocking the potential of young people.
The approval for the 2025 scholarship and bursary comes two weeks after the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) commenced payment of the 2023/2024 scholarship and bursary scheme, with 4,837 indigent students from its mandate areas benefiting.
Aiyedatiwa said, “Many of our students face significant financial challenges in pursuing their academic dreams. That is why we have these bursaries and scholarship awards, as well as financial assistance, to provide support, alleviate financial burdens, and enable our students to focus on their studies.
“These awards are a testament to our commitment to investing in the future of our state and our country. We must ensure that our students have access to quality education and the necessary support to excel in their academic pursuits.”
Aiyedatiwa stressed that the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to investing in the future of the state and ensuring that students have access to quality education and the support required to succeed.
