  • 2. Late Check-In
  • 3. Health concerns
  • 4. Overbooked flight
  • 5. Unruly behaviour

Airlines have regulations that guide their operations and rules that passengers are meant to adhere to strictly for a smooth travel experience.

While most travellers board their flights without issues, there are situations where an airline may deny a passenger access to the plane. Understanding these reasons can help you avoid unnecessary disruptions to your journey.

In this article are 5 reasons you can be denied access to a flight.

1. Inadequate travel documentation

Invalid travel documents are one of the reasons you can be denied access to a flight.

As an individual who needs to embark on a flight, you must always ensure that your travel documents, such as visa and passport, are valid and meet the requirements of your destination.

Always check for the expiry date of your passport and the visa requirements for each destination you are visiting.

2. Late Check-In

For every airline you intend to travel with, there are specific check-in deadlines that all passengers must meet.

Late arrival and check-in at the airport can lead to being denied access to your flight.

You should be at the airport at least 2 hours before the scheduled departure time.

Many airlines stick to the scheduled check-in period in order to ensure that your flight departs on time and arrives at its destination at the scheduled time.

3. Health concerns

Another reason you can be denied access to a flight is health concerns.

You can be denied access to a flight if you show symptoms of a contagious illness or have an unstable health condition.

It is important to know that airlines prioritize the safety and well-being of all passengers so they may refuse to give you access if there are health concerns.

4. Overbooked flight

Sometimes, airlines book more people onto a flight than there are seats on the plane. This is because people don’t always turn up despite having booked a flight.

However, in the case where all passengers show up, then the airline may have to deny some passengers access.

Also, this may occur as a result of a last-minute aircraft change. If the new aircraft has fewer seats, then the airline has no other option than denying some passengers access to the flight.

In such cases, airlines may provide alternative flights or give a refund.

5. Unruly behaviour

A passenger’s unruly behaviour can also be a reason they can be denied access to a flight. Engaging in a physical confrontation, being aggressive, or being intoxicated or under the influence of illegal drugs are reasons you can be denied access to a flight.

Other reasons include baggage or prohibited items issues, failure to follow airline policies and security concerns.

By staying informed and following airline guidelines, you can reduce the chances of being denied access to your flight.
