As schools open for a new session on Tuesday, the Alumni Association of Jericho High School (JEHOSA), Eleyele, Ibadan, has called on the Oyo State Government to urgently help fix the access road to the school, which have become impassable due to flood.
The association through its Public Relations Officer, Obarotimi Maitanmi, in a statement, said the call became expedient as with more rains and attendant flooding, the access road to the school will be totally cut off.
Presently, the association said student and staff were bound to face significant challenges as the resume on Tuesday as the road has been severely impacted by flooding, rendering it virtually impassable.
The association said the rains in recent days have further deteriorated the state of the road, with some parts of the passage submerged under water, making access difficult.
It added that the charge also became important as students and staff members of the school are in for a hazardous and hectic experience gaining access to the school as they reopen on Tuesday.
The statement read: “The road has been severely impacted by flooding, which has rendered it almost impassable. As a result, both students and teachers may face significant challenges when school resumes on Tuesday, September 17th, 2024.
“The school administration is particularly concerned about the possibility of unforeseen casualties due to the worsening condition of the road.
“Heavy rains in recent weeks have further deteriorated the road, leaving parts submerged under water. With the rainy season still ongoing, the situation could become more dangerous if left unaddressed.
“We call on Governor Seyi Makinde and the relevant authorities to act quickly in repairing the road before the resumption of academic activities.
“Flooding threatens not only the safety of those accessing the school, but also the smooth functioning of day-to-day operations.
“Also, both students and staff could be forced to navigate hazardous conditions to reach the school premises, which would not only disrupt education but could also put lives at risk.”
In the interim, the association said the school management has been charged to work with relevant stakeholders to put a temporary foot passage, while it expects the state government to provide a permanent solution to the challenge.
