Agbekoya berates Yoruba Nation faction over attack on Oyo govt secretariat

Agbekoya Parapo, a Yoruba socio-cultural group, has condemned a recent attack on the Oyo State government secretariat by a faction of Yoruba Nation, saying the attack was “uncivilised and did not represent the Yoruba people well.”

Agbekoya Parapo, in a communiqué it issued at the end of its emergency meeting in Ibadan, on Thursday, said it stood against “the uncivilised attack and attempted plot to hijack a democratic government in Oyo State,” saying the attempt to topple a democratic government by a faction of Yoruba Nation was a daydream.

In the communiqué signed by its President, Aare (Dr) Kunle Oshodi, and Secretary, Omo Oba Kunle Adelakun Eruobodo, the group said: “We, Agbekoya Parapo warn any faction of Yoruba Nation to desist from any act that may cause political instability or double up the political temperature of the country in a negative way.

“The Yoruba people are too mature and civilised to go into a vague conflict with any section of the country or create a path to violence and destruction of the established authorities in the country.”

The group also appealed to the leadership of Yoruba Nation under the leadership of Prof Banji Akintoye “to sternly warn those who conceived and intend to hatch any idea of creating political upheaval and social unrest in Nigeria,” saying “we are Yoruba people and we know exactly the way and manner in which we do things, mostly in a well-tailored and civilized manner and not otherwise.”

It pledged its support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, pointing out that “although we might be watching his administration from a distance but so far, we applaud his strong conviction and tailored policies in his efforts to stabilise Nigeria, on both the political and economic scales.”

The communiqué added: “The Agbekoya Parapo while denouncing the recent invasion of Oyo State Government Secretariat, urges the Oyo State government and all the relevant security stakeholders to do all that might be necessary to forestall a similar occurrence in the future.

“We also assure Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State of our unwavering support and solidarity in this instance and always and also urge him not to relent in ridding the state of irrelevant, irredentist elements and confusionists.”
