Again, many killed as bandits attack Goronyo Market in Sokoto

Many people have been reportedly killed as suspected bandits again attacked another market in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The suspected armed bandits attacked the Goronyo market in Goronyo local government area in the Eastern Senatorial District of Sokoto State on Sunday which happens to be the market day.

Sources in the village said the assailants attacked the market in large numbers and started shooting sporadically leading to the death of several persons.

The source who spoke on condition of anonymity further disclosed that casualties figures are not known yet as the area is still unsafe for residents to access.

This latest attacked to make it the third time in less than two weeks that attacked is taking place in village markets across Sokoto State.

It will be recalled that last week Thursday, suspected members of the outlawed volunteer Vigilantes group also known as Yan Sakai attacked and killed nine Fulanis at Manmade market in Gwadabawa local government area of the state.

Twenty persons were also killed by suspected bandits at the Ungwan Lalle market of Sabon Birni local government area of Sokoto State.

Sokoto state government had earlier ordered the closure of markets in the Eastern Senatorial District of the state as a measure to fight the rising insecurity brewing in the state.

Meanwhile, the state government has confirmed the latest attacks in the Goronyo local government area of Sokoto State.

The state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, confirmed this while receiving the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Faruk Yahya, who paid him a courtesy visit in Sokoto on Monday.

The governor appealed to the Army Chief to deployed more personnel as well as resources to the state to help in curbing the activities of bandits and other criminal elements in the state.
