Aftermath of ward congresses: Gombe guber aspirants unite for party’s victory

AFTERMATH of the last Saturday ward congresses of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in Gombe State, some of the gubernatorial aspirants of the party in the 2019 election have vowed to be united and support whoever emerges as the party’s flagbearer after the party’s primaries later in the year.

The first among the aspirants to speak out his mind just before the commencement of the ward congresses in Gombe was Abubakar Habu Mu’azu who expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the congresses.

The aspirant assured that the congresses were very peaceful considering the fact that the party wants to take over power from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state as such, disunity will not allow them to achieve victory.

He said, “We cannot allow ourselves to be in rancour and have problems after the congresses, we hope that the results of the congresses will go smoothly with all of us” adding that all the aspirants have reached a united stance for the sake of the success of the party in the state.

While bearing his mind on the conduct of the ward congresses, the Minister of State for Works, Power and Housing, Suleiman Hassan expressed happiness over a departure from the past where someone sits somewhere and decides the lists of delegates.

But speaking earlier, Chairman of the Committee for the conduct of the Congresses in the State, Alhaji Suleiman Kawu Sumaila regretted the late commencement of the Congresses which he attributed to their late arrival to Gombe from Abuja.

According to him, the exercise was supposed to have commenced by 8:00 am but that due to the human factor, it will have to be delayed but commenced by 2:00 pm.

However, our correspondent who monitored the conduct of the congresses reports that up till about 3:15 pm, the committee members had not departed the state secretariat of the party to their various LGA’s for the conduct of the congresses.

The delay in the conduct of the exercise led to apprehension and anxiety among the cross-section of the supporters who had waited to elect their leaders at the ward levels.

As at the time of filing this report, the results were still being awaited while indications were rife that there will be no agitation from any quarter.
