Multimedia journalist, Abisola Alawode has launched a documentary series focused on African religion and spirituality.
Titled, ‘Exploring African Spirituality’, the series is a passion project driven by a desire to highlight the compelling, often untold stories surrounding African spirituality and religion. The series features in-depth interviews with spiritual leaders, historians, and practitioners.
Abisola explained, “I made this documentary because I believe that sharing these intriguing stories is vital to understanding the cultural fabric of Africa. Christianity/Islam are not the only religions Africans practice.
“In Nigeria today, other aspects of our spirituality that are not rooted in Christianity or Islam are often looked down upon. In fact, people who hold diverse views different from what our society considers ‘appropriate’ are often swayed aside. However they are allowed to have their point of view about religion that is not necessarily grounded in Islam or Christianity.
“Our spirituality as a people is much more than these two. Our traditional practices deserve the same recognition as Christianity/Islam. It’s also about giving a voice to those who uphold centuries-old traditions and practices.”
Episode one of the documentary explores the reasons why young Africans are choosing traditional religions over Christianity and Islam, offering valuable insights into cultural identity and spiritual beliefs.
By highlighting the diversity and depth of African spirituality, the documentary challenges stereotypes and fosters a deeper understanding of these rich traditions.
The documentary is currently streaming on Abisola Alawode’s YouTube channel.
