Governor Ademola Adeleke has summoned the management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) over persistent blackouts in Osogbo and other major towns in Osun State.

The governor described the situation as “unbearable” for residents.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Adeleke lamented the worsening power supply and its negative effects on businesses and residents. He affirmed that IBEDC needs to explain the challenges and work towards finding a lasting solution.

The governor noted that field reports confirmed the persistent power outages, adding that businesses are grinding to a halt due to the situation.

“We cannot continue like this,” he said.

Adeleke invited IBEDC management for a brainstorming session to find a way out of the crisis.

He acknowledged that the power sector is capital-intensive and a national challenge, but emphasized that Osun State is suffering greatly.

The governor announced plans to diversify energy sources, focusing on renewable energy as a sustainable alternative. He mentioned the Osun Electricity Law, which would lead to the establishment of the Osun Electricity Regulatory Commission.

The commission would license power-generating companies and regulate the power market system, opening up the energy sector and protecting IBEDC customers’ interests.

Adeleke directed the Commissioner for Energy to organize a consultation with IBEDC and consumer advocacy groups to find immediate solutions.

The governor also addressed the support for rainstorm victims, stating that the state emergency agency is compiling names and details of affected individuals.

Victims are encouraged to submit their details to the agency, and the state government is working on local and national support.

Adeleke commended Senator Lere Oyewumi for raising the issue in the Senate and announced contacts with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and National Economic Council to rally support for the victims.
