The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Osun State has declared that it will emerge victorious in the 2026 governorship election, asserting that both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will face defeat.
This declaration is in response to the recent communiqué from the Osun State PDP, which confirmed Governor Ademola Adeleke’s decision to remain with the PDP and his endorsement for re-election in 2026, while also endorsing President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 election.
Charles Omidiji, the Osun State Chairman of the ADC, expressed scepticism about Governor Adeleke’s prospects, irrespective of his party affiliation.
“If he doesn’t join the APC again, it will only reduce the margin of the loss awaiting him at the poll,” ADC’s Omidiji stated, adding, “If he had defected, that would have been the end of both the APC and PDP in Osun. But whatever happens, ADC will produce the next Osun governor.”
Omidiji’s confidence stems from the ambitions of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), especially with former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola reportedly serving as its Interim National Secretary.
Aregbesola, a former stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Minister of Interior, recently joined the ADC as part of a broader opposition coalition aimed at challenging the APC in the 2027 elections.
The Osun PDP’s communique, issued on Sunday, July 21, 2025, from a leadership caucus meeting at the Government House, Osogbo, sought to quash persistent rumours of Adeleke’s defection to the APC.
It stated that “the majority of the members of the APC in Osun State are opposed to the idea of the defection of Governor Adeleke to the APC, which did not originate from the governor in the first instance.”
Furthermore, the PDP statement acknowledged that “the majority of PDP members in Osun State are not happy about the idea of the defection of Governor Adeleke to the APC, but reluctantly agreed to follow Governor Adeleke to whichever party he goes to show their love, support and loyalty to his leadership.”
Despite these internal party dynamics, the Osun PDP leadership officially endorsed President Tinubu for re-election in 2027, citing Osun as his “ancestral home.”
Concurrently, they reaffirmed Governor Adeleke’s re-election bid for 2026 under the PDP platform, urging all party members to remain loyal to the PDP.
