Lawyer and politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has declared that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is the only true opposition party in Nigeria, dismissing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) as “parties that exist only on paper.”
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, Okonkwo argued that the PDP and LP have lost credibility as many of their leaders openly align with either the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the ADC.
“Strictly speaking, there is no longer any party like the PDP or LP. They are just existing on paper because whoever is in the PDP is either supporting the APC or the ADC. That’s what it is,” he said.
Citing the example of former Rivers governor, Nyesom Wike, Okonkwo said: “If the leaders of the PDP have come out openly to say they are supporting the presidential candidate of another political party, that’s the end of the party.”
Okonkwo, who served as spokesperson for Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election, also downplayed the Labour Party’s chances in 2027, insisting it lacks the structure to win.
“The ADC is the only political party that is the opposition party,” he stated.
On whether Obi would be adopted as the ADC’s presidential candidate in 2027, Okonkwo said the party would hold a free and fair primary.
“Whoever emerges, the party will support the person against Tinubu. The ADC is courting every Nigerian without preference,” he added.
The opposition coalition, which adopted the ADC as its platform on July 2, 2025, includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, ex-Senate President David Mark, and other political heavyweights.
President Bola Tinubu, however, has dismissed the coalition, describing its members as “political IDPs” who cannot unseat him in 2027.
