The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO), Professor Stephen Obekpa, addressed the pressing concerns of students following a recent peaceful protest over water shortages and power cuts.
In a highly engaging session held on Monday at the main hall of Otada Campus, Professor Obekpa, alongside other senior officials, met with students and reassured them of the management’s commitment to their welfare.
Recognising the severe impact of the water shortage, Professor Obekpa announced that he had secured the approval of the Chief Medical Director of the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Otukpo (FUTHSO), to provide the university with access to the hospital’s water tanker as a temporary relief measure.
He further disclosed that the Pro-Chancellor had also authorised the procurement of a university-owned water tanker, and that TETFund had indicated possible funding support for water infrastructure.
On the issue of power outages, the Acting VC directed the University Bursar, Mr Alechenu Aba, to release ₦150,000 to the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JET) for the restoration of power to the Doctors’ Hostel. He acknowledged the setbacks caused by vandalised armoured cables but assured students that repairs were underway.
To address sanitation concerns, a sanitation committee comprising students and management was established.

On accommodation, the Acting VC confirmed that ₦700 million had been secured for new hostel facilities near the teaching hospital—an essential requirement for accreditation by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
Transportation challenges were also addressed, with Professor Obekpa revealing that the university had procured a bus, while a philanthropist had pledged to donate an additional vehicle to ease student mobility.
In response to calls for a Students’ Union, the Acting VC expressed full support and announced plans to establish a Student-Management Liaison Committee to facilitate open communication.
On security, he assured the student body that the university was implementing robust measures to ensure their safety on campus.
Miss Mercy Ejeh, a 400-level Microbiology student, in a vote of thanks, commended the Acting VC for his prompt action and willingness to engage with students directly.
