Accreditation part of academic culture — UI VC

Published by

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Kayode  Adebowale, has acknowledged the regulatory role of  professional bodies, saying they  are put in place for comparison of standards both nationally and internationally,  as well as for close monitoring and evaluation in order to prevent abuse.

The VC, who made the acknowledgement while receiving the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON)’s team visit to the institution for an accreditation exercise noted that professional courses such as Architecture are regulated by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and ARCON for adequate preparation of the students.

He disclosed that two accreditation exercises are usually done for professional courses, which he noted posed challenges to the university because they required double templates and preparation.

He expressed his desire for adequate structures and institutions where students are sufficiently prepared and impacted through practice by  professional bodies.

Professor Adebowale assured the assessors of the maximum cooperation of the university in achieving the purposes of the visit.

He said the exercise will no doubt be an advantage to the Department of Architecture and for the university to continue to be the first and best.

The five-man team led by the dean of the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management, UI, Professor Olusiyi Ipingbemi, comprised Arc. Dayo Odeyemi (FNIA), Arc. Sola Olajuyigbe (FNIA), Arc. Bolaji Rotibi, Professor Babatunde Jaiyeoba and Professor Oluwole Ajayi.

Responding, the chairman of ARCON, Arc. Dayo Odeyemi, noted that the compliance visit was meant for the assessment of the Department of Architecture, University of Ibadan.

He added that it is also to evaluate the level of compliance of the department with the recommendations of the advisory accreditation exercise done in October 2021.
