Abuja driver bags 2 years for drug trafficking

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday sentenced a 41-year-old driver, Mohammed Abdullahi, to two years imprisonment for drug trafficking.

Justice B.O. Quadri gave the verdict after the accused pleaded guilty to the charge of dealing in hemp.

“The accused has pleaded guilty to the charge before this honourable court and he is hereby convicted as charged.

“The convict is accordingly sentenced to two years imprisonment beginning from Sept. 16, 2016, the date of arrest without an option of fine.

“The drug exhibit is to be returned to the office of the NDLEA for destruction, if this judgement is not appealed within 30 days of delivery,” the judge ruled.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convict, who resides at Zuba area of Abuja, was arrested with 97.1kg of Cannabis sativa (hemp).

The NDLEA Prosecutor, Mr Mike Kassa, had told the court that the accused was arrested by the agency’s officials with 10 sacks containing the hard drug.

Kassa said that about 97.1kg of hemp was recovered from Abdullahi which he conveyed in his Volkswagen car.

The offence contravened the provisions of Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
